We are in a world where video production is becoming more democratic. Now most of us have a small camera in our pockets that can be of good quality. Even renowned directors like Steven Soderbergh have attempted the challenge of filming feature films solely with a mobile phone. While the act of recording moving images has been made accessible to all, not everyone is necessarily a Spielberg in the making.
While shooting seems easy, producing a quality video that stands out is a challenge. The majority of appreciated productions go through 3 writing sessions: the script, the direction, but also the editing. Indeed, we might forget it, but assembling the filmed sequences, sounds and music is a precise art. Many productions are based on this aspect. For example, did you know that it was in editing that Star Wars, the first of its kind, was made digestible and became that cult work of cinema?
As a result, it becomes important for someone wishing to offer video in an entertainment or educational context to have the tools to edit. And more importantly, to use them properly.
Of course, publishers like Adobe have long made their mark in the editing software field. Their "Premiere Pro CC" successor to Final Cut is intended, they say, to be easier to use, and they've offered a tutorial for grasping the basics of editing with their program. On the other hand, we are thus talking about professional software that will fetch in the 300 euros / $ and more. Nevertheless, those looking to produce a lot of clips and are even looking to add special effects will find satisfaction with this type of software.
As more and more people can shoot videos with their phones, there is no need to then transfer these to a computer. There are now apps on iPhone and Android that make it easy to edit on mobile devices, such as iMovie, which is very successful on phones running iOS.
On the other hand, beginners who do not want to shell out fortunes may prefer free solutions that are a little less comprehensive, but reasonable and with enthusiasts offering tutorials.
For example, HitFilm offers paid editing solutions, but its Express version is always free. This French blogger and videographer swear by this app. He's never taken an audiovisual course so he has been learning on the job with different software, but it was this one that caught his eye. He offers a free downloadable guide as well as videos and blog posts on his site. HitFilm is quite simple to use. Users import their videos, music, and sound effects and simply drag in footage that they can cut, lengthen or shorten.
In the same vein, this Youtuber offers a fairly comprehensive presentation of Shotcut on his site. The open-source software also happens to be easy but uses more of a concept that separates the raw elements from the timeline, etc. So it's a different genre, but one that may appeal to some budding editors.
Simpler software that has already been around for a while, Avidemux, aims to be a simple solution for producing videos that require cutting, applying filters, or encoding a video. A software that educational institutions such as the Academy of Strasbourg suggest until today and, even if the interface looks old-fashioned.
Having software is essential, but you also need to know the tricks of editing. Already a visit to this film site will give a good idea of the important elements in editing. There, the concepts of pacing, cutting shots, effects, transitions, etc. will be covered. Certainly, the site approaches editing from its cinematic angle, but this can also be applied to video vignettes on the Internet, educational or not.
Finally, this post reminds us of common mistakes in editing and how to avoid them. For example, how to make sure the cut isn't too sharp and jumps out at the listener or that the transition is done correctly. And then there's the notion of sound and visual quality that can be improved on some editing software. The article is not exhaustive on what to do, but it is a good reminder for an editor who is learning without a course.
Indeed, It is not necessary to have your certification from an AV school to edit videos. Nor is it essential to spend fortunes. There are free solutions and people who have also learned on the job who are willing to share their knowledge on sites like YouTube, among others. Budding editors no longer have to be afraid to take the plunge.
