Who says you have to learn by sitting and staying almost still? Certainly not neuroscientists, who are showing in study after study that movement and learning are not opposites, quite the contrary. Thus, more and more of them are proposing classroom models that incorporate action.
In Switzerland, a few teachers have been experimenting with flexible classrooms or breaks to move during class time. Their observation, and that of their students, seems unambiguous: teaching is much better when learners can sit as they please. Much to the surprise of principals accustomed to the traditional setting, they admit the benefits of these approaches. A report that could well inspire many to follow suit.
